There and back again

My Wednesday-Sunday visit to Geneseo was jam packed with a lot of "stuff." I don't feel the need to blog about most of it, but here are a just a few quick shout outs  from my stay...

SHOUT OUT TO 21 ELM and Little:

Ah 21 Elmers are great, especially my friendie Marie. Shout out to the ladies: Bo, Anna and Meg as well as the lads: Evan, Scott and Nick. You guys are going to have a wild senior year…from what Bo told me, there was a Mia’s progressive of sorts that swept through the house today...

I never question where I want to crash when I'm visiting the 'seo: it is 21 Elm. There were six fluffy fuzzy blankets at my disposal ( I kid you not, lots of extra blankets) as well as a plush comfy couch to crash on. The coziest.

This is my only picture of a 21-Elmer (see below). It is young Marie (the Queen of cozy), covered by a blanket (one of the 6 that were available to me).

Thursday night Taz slept over there too, so we each had three blankets (hi Taz, see right).

Loved seeing nugget Claire. I actually went to the IB with you, finally!  I can’t complain about the dollar dranks, they are kind-of-awesome...even though not the biggest fan of the IBizzle, maybe, justmaybe, it will grow on me.  Thanks for being there for me, I'm going to miss you!

(Claire &Me)

SHOUT OUT TO PSEUDO-FIONA (Adam Lashinsky)
I approve of the 'Fiona to Adam' apartment transition. He has integrated himself into the apartment flawlessly, I think it's the combo of: offering cool magnets to the kitchen, allowing fellow apartment-mates to eat his doughnuts (see photo to the right), supplying Kit-Kats to Audrey when she's in need of a break, or just sharing some wild stories from Amsterdam. Trust me, there are some crazy stories...this is a direct quote from Adam that Taz recorded:

"Next thing I remember, I was sitting with a hamburger in my hand in the back of a police car.

I woke up at noon the next day in my own bed, fully clothed, burger in my right pocket, bottle of whiskey in  hand, confused. "

-->Nice kitchen shot with the  magnets, good job Adam!

My room has been transformed, but I'm glad

to know that the Titanic poster that I

adhered to the wall to cover up the holes

in the wall still remains (see photo

below).

Adam has transformed this room into a ninja-cove... I hope the gun over the bed is not something that can inflict real pain (see photo below).

 SHOUT OUT TO BEV EV:

I met up with one of my favorite professors, Beverly Evans, to catch up on life, and talk about my upcoming trip. We went to Muddy’s to grab some lunch; the “Tangy Turkey” sandwich caught us offguard. Why is it called ‘tangy’ turkey? There is nothing ‘tangy’ about it... so why is it called ‘tangy’ turkey? That is some food for thought.

Not only did Beverly do her graduate studies in Paris, but she goes there every summer with Hum students. Her intelligence and knowledge of French literature, history and music is inspiring as well as intimidating.  I hope to find the passion that she has for French in whatever career I choose to pursue. I  have learned so much from our in-class discussions; I am lucky to have had her as a teacher and mentor since my freshman year. Merci Madame!

She let me know:

--> that I should avoid the Chatlet METRO , so I won’t be bombarded by the (Penn Station/Times Square-like  rush) bustling Parisian bodies.
--> Saint-Eustache is the church  where I can listen to the best organist.
-->where to buy a cheap French press to make coffee
--> farmers markets I can walk to from my apartment
-->places to get funky clothing near le Marais
-->how to get to Victor Hugo's house
-->to visit Rue Etienne Marcel to discover history from the 14th and 15th centuries
-->where her favorite parc is...it is called Montsouris (Mouse Mountain)

and so much more…

I was taking notes like crazy as she reminisced, it was great. I can totally picture her as a hippy longhaired college student exploring Paris.

SHOUT OUT TO THE GURKS:
I really don’t know what I would have done without them. Saturday night with my gurkies( Taz and Nicole)was comprised of staying stationary on our black pleather couch (holla to Mark!) until the wee hours of the morn', while watching stupid videos ranging in our respective comedic tastes.
Taz chuckled at ‘drangonball z peepee,' while Nico experienced a hearty lol at ‘laddergoat.’ We all enjoyed the Kristen Bell ‘sloth video.’ Watching Michael Cerra in a ‘Drunk History’ was not that funny, although his awkward and endearing presence is usually quite comical no matter how shitty the video is.

A memorable part of the night, was by-far watching the progression of people in the kitchen move from the state of sobriety to that of inebriation. I’m not going into the deets, but Nico and Taz agree that we all felt like we were completely removed from the kitchen chaos, in a way in which we felt like we were watching a hilarious movie starring a few of our ridiculous friendies. It was great.

Later on, video-chatting our friend Katy Boland, who is studying in the South of France this semester, was just loverly. We time-travelled to France through the utile of Skype and saw the sun rise  through the paneling of her window. The bright soleil  shining on her face made her look like a floating angelic head, surrounded by a cherub of sunshine...hah.

I’m going to try to limit my internet activity when I’m in France, but I will definitely keep my tabs on my close friends and fam through video chats.

            SHOUT OUT TO THE FAM:
Sunday, my dad (Yoseph) picked me up from Geneseo and brought me to Gram and Gramps house. They live in a land called “Hidden Valley” just like the ranch dressing. It’s been a pretty magical place to me since my childhood.  I have memories of: winning and losing vicious ping-pong battles with my uncles in the basement, getting lost with my cousins in the wild marshland next to their house, and watching Gramps make his efficient and effortless breakfast by cracking two eggs simultaneously…one egg per hand (that's a pretty cool skillset, I hope one day I will master it).

Grandpa is staying strong and caring for Gram, which is not an easy task. Her dementia has progressed to a point where she can only remember intervals of a few minutes, and then she forgets. She won’t remember: that I go to Geneseo, that I visited her yesterday, or that I’m about to study abroad.  Grandma's love and happiness evident in the moment, is enough for me. Her sense of humor and optimism is still intact even though she can’t consciously recall the immediate past. Even though she won't remember what she told me, I will.
After visiting the grandparents, we stopped by my aunt Kathy-Jo’s place in Rochester to pick up my Uncle Danny’s pool table. Uncle Dan died a few years ago suddenly, but he is not forgotten. He was a lot like my Dad. He loved outdoor adventures, especially camping and fishing. He was an introverted deep thinker with a dry sense of humor (I will be ever scarred from his mongoose jack-in the box prank). I used to drive his Monte Carlo car when I was in high school; I called the car “Uncle Monty.” My dad decided to pick up his pool table, and will somehow find some room to squeeze it into his house. As of now, the shuffleboard table is taking up a lot of living room space so there might need to be a shuffleboard sacrifice for something bigger and better: billiards, that is.

Sunday night at Mom's place,  which  consisted of veggie chili, snuggles with Mom, SAG awards and chocolate, was much needed. I know that going to Paris is a dream come true and am so lucky to have this opportunity.   Change is sad, and although I'm sinking a little right now, I know I will float back up in a few days when I’m busy with a new way of life, internship, school and best friend Lena!

A good friend Paul, who is studying in Spain is visiting Paris this weekend, he just told me…I can’t wait. Lena and I were planning on visiting my host family in Athus, Belgium this weekend but have decided to wait a few weeks because I need some time to settle down before we peace out. Sometime in mid-Feb I will be re-united with some Belgians!

-->FOOD SHOUT OUT!

Shout out to lil' Buddha TEA!  Yoseph took me there today for the first time. It's a pretty gosh darn cute tea hang-out. Check it out, if you pass through Albany.

       SHOUT OUT TO PARIS!
1)   I am going to try to write and paint when I'm in Paris (hopefully with Lena'), and work on my Parisian bucketlist of things to do...oh it's long.
2)   I am going to stay in shape and stay healthy while abroad, not just talking about the physical (Oh oui,  I am going to prance around le  Jardin de Luxembourg a lot) but I want to stay mentally in check too.
3)  I am going to try to have a stronger reign on my emotions, I want to find happiness in myself again

A la prochaine, see you in a couple months Geneseo and
see you in two days PARIS!
